Sacred Fire, Ancient Blessings
Traditional Homams, Poojas & Vedic Astrology — Performed with Devotion at Amrutham
An Invitation to the Sacred
Before temples were raised in stone, there was fire. In the Vedic understanding, Agni — the sacred flame — is the messenger between worlds: whatever is offered into it with intention, the fire carries upward. A homam (fire ritual) is exactly this — mantras, ghee, herbs, and prayer offered into a consecrated flame. A pooja (ritual worship) is its quieter companion — devotion expressed through flowers, lamps, and offerings, without the fire altar.
At Amrutham, these ceremonies are performed by experienced priests in the living Kerala tradition — the fire altar (homakunda) laid brick by brick, the mandala drawn by hand in coloured powders, the bronze lamps (nilavilakku) lit one by one. You may take part, or simply sit close and witness; either way, something in you grows still.

Below are the homams and poojas we arrange, each with its traditional purpose — and our Vedic astrology consultation, a service in its own right. If you are unsure which ceremony is right for you, that is a lovely place to begin.
Maha Ganapati Homam
Every auspicious beginning starts with Lord Ganapati — the elephant-headed remover of obstacles. In this homam, his mantras are offered into the sacred fire with ghee, sweet offerings (modaka), and durva grass, invoking his blessing on whatever you are about to begin.
It is traditionally performed at thresholds — a new home, a new venture, a marriage, a fresh chapter of life — and sought for a path made clear: obstacles softened, confusion lifted, beginnings blessed.
Maha Sudarsana Homam
The Sudarsana chakra is the radiant discus of Lord Vishnu — in the tradition’s imagery, protection that moves at the speed of light. This powerful homam invokes it through the fire, with mantras chanted for protection across many centuries.
It is sought when life feels besieged — persistent negativity, hostility, obstacles that refuse to shift. Devotees turn to it for swift protection, renewed courage, and the clearing of what stands in the way.
Maha Mrityunjaya Homam
At the heart of this homam is the Mrityunjaya mantra of the Rig Veda — a prayer to Lord Shiva as “the great conqueror of death”. It asks, in one of the most tender images in scripture, to be released from fear as gently as a ripe cucumber is freed from its vine.
It is traditionally performed for health, healing, and long life — before or after an illness or surgery, in seasons of anxiety, or simply as a prayer for someone you love. We make no medical claims; this is devotion, not treatment — and it has steadied hearts for three thousand years.
Dhanwanthari Homam
Lord Dhanwanthari is the divine physician — the source of Ayurveda itself — who rose from the churned ocean bearing a pot of amrutham, the nectar of immortality from which this resort takes its name. To perform his homam here, in a place devoted to healing, feels less like a service and more like a homecoming.
The ritual is traditionally sought for recovery and lasting health — your own, or a loved one’s — and pairs beautifully with a Panchakarma or Ayurvedic stay, letting the outer medicine and the inner prayer work side by side.
Navagraha Homam
Jyotisha — Vedic astrology — reads a life through nine celestial influences (Navagraha): the sun, the moon, five planets, and the shadow nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each has its season in a person’s chart; some seasons are harder than others.
In this homam each graha receives its own mantras and offerings, performed to soften unfavourable influences and strengthen the favourable — steadiness in unsettled times. It is often recommended after an astrology consultation, when the chart shows a difficult period underway.
Chandika Homam
Chandika is the Goddess in her fierce fullness — the protective Mother who meets darkness directly, so that her devotees need not. Her homam draws on the great Devi tradition of the Chandi, and is counted among the most potent of fire rituals.
It is performed for protection and victory when difficulty has grown stubborn — negativity that lingers, fear that will not leave, trials that ask for more strength than you have alone.
Gayatri Homam
The Gayatri mantra is called the mother of the Vedas — a prayer that the same light which kindles the sun may kindle our understanding.
Its homam is quiet and luminous: performed for clarity of mind, purity of speech, and depth of wisdom. It suits students and seekers, those beginning a spiritual discipline, and anyone whose thinking has grown clouded and longs for light.
Aghora Homam
Aghora is the southern face of Lord Shiva, and his name holds a paradox — it means “not terrifying”. His fierceness is turned only towards darkness itself: what harms, what haunts, what refuses to release its grip.
This is strong medicine of the spirit — a deeply protective rite, performed with reverence by priests trained in its tradition, and sought to burn away entrenched negativity, malefic influences, and long-held fear.
Durga Devi Pooja
Goddess Durga is the protective Mother — she who cannot be defeated. Her pooja honours her with flowers, lamps, and the recitation of her names, seeking her strength on your behalf.
It is sought in times of fear, transition, and vulnerability — for the protection of family, courage in adversity, and the steady reassurance that you do not walk alone.
Vastu Bali Pooja
In the Indian understanding, a dwelling is not inert — the land and the house have a presence of their own, honoured as Vastu Purusha. When that presence is disturbed, a home can feel restless no matter how beautiful it is.
This bali (ritual offering) harmonises the energies of a plot or home. It is traditionally performed before construction, at a housewarming (griha pravesha), or whenever a space feels unsettled — so that the house may become what it is meant to be: a shelter, a sanctuary, a place of peace.
Chakrabja Pooja
Among the treasures of Kerala’s tantric tradition is the chakrabja mandala — lotus and wheel interwoven — drawn entirely by hand in coloured powders, petal by petal. Upon this living diagram, Lord Narayana is invoked and worshipped; you can see one glowing among the photographs on this page.
The pooja is performed for harmony, prosperity, and auspiciousness in the household, and for easing subtle afflictions that resist naming. It is as beautiful to witness as it is profound.
Narayana Bali Pooja
Grief sometimes carries a question that will not rest — is the one we lost at peace? Narayana Bali is the tradition’s ancient, tender answer: a rite offered to Lord Narayana on behalf of the departed, especially those who left life suddenly or whose last rites could not be completed.
It is performed to ease the onward journey of the soul and to lift ancestral afflictions (pitru dosha) from the family line. For those who remain, it offers something quieter still — the consolation of having done what love could do.
Vedic Astrology Consultation (Jyotisha)
Alongside our ceremonies — and as a service in its own right — we offer consultations in Jyotisha, the Vedic science of time. An experienced astrologer reads your birth chart (janma kundali) and the unfolding periods of a life (dasha), and considers the timings that favour or test you.
Come with a question — a decision, a difficulty, a beginning — and leave with perspective: which season you are in, what may serve you, and, where appropriate, whether a homam or pooja is traditionally recommended and when (muhurtha — the auspicious moment). We hold it lightly and honestly: a mirror for reflection, never a substitute for effort or medical care. Consultations can be arranged during your stay, or on request.
Suresh Namboodiri — Vedic Astrology and Rituals
Drawing on a family lineage of astrology more than four centuries old, Suresh Namboodiri offers a contemplative, traditional counterpoint to the rest of our team. As our Principal Consultant for Vedic Astrology and Rituals, he reads birth charts and life patterns through authentic Jyotisha (Vedic astrology) to help guests find clarity and direction — in work, study, relationships, and the larger question of where life is heading.
His guidance extends to the spaces we live in. Through Vastu Shastra — the traditional science of harmonious dwelling — he advises on how a home or workplace can be ordered to support ease and well-being. And where difficult planetary periods weigh on a chart, he prescribes time-honoured remedies and rituals to soften the influence of malefic planetary effects (graha doshas). For those who wish, he offers personalised consultations and the quiet, steadying perspective that only centuries-old practice can give.
